The photo above is not of Enku-butsu at Arako-kannon-ji, but of the same Enku statue in the collection of Ryusen-ji. The Enku-butsu enshrined at Arako-kannon-ji can be seen in a variety of forms, ranging from a large statue of Fudo Myoo to a few centimeters of Amida Nyorai.

Born in Mino Province (present-day southern Gifu Prefecture) in the early Edo Period (1632), Enku traveled throughout Japan while creating 120,000 Buddhist statues, often staying at “Arako-Kannon-ji Temple” during his 64-year life.
During his 64-year life, he often stayed at “Arako-Kannon-ji Temple. He created many Buddhist statues, including a statue of Niou, and even today, 1,256 Buddhist statues are enshrined in the temple.

Enku-butsu is open to the public on the second Saturday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The fee is 500 yen. The admission fee is 500 yen.

Enku” was born in 1632 in what is now southern Gifu Prefecture. He entered the Buddhist school at an early age, and when he grew up, he went to Mount Ibuki and other places for ascetic training.
As an ascetic monk, he created many Buddhist statues while traveling from Hokkaido to Kansai to save people. The Buddha images range in size from 321 centimeters for the Niou statue to 2.8 centimeters for the Amida statue.
There are approximately 5,400 Enku Buddhist statues existing in Japan. Of these, 1,256 (the largest in Japan) are enshrined at Arako-Kannon-ji Temple.
The types of Buddha images vary from nyorai (buddhas), bodhisattvas, heavenly deities, ancestors, and others. The variety is abundant and diverse, ranging from simplified to rustic statues.
Enku Buddha is characterized by its rough and wild appearance, mysterious smile, and unique carving method called Itto-bori carving.
